17 Oct Knowing when to repaint your house
There’s no denying that repainting a house is a pretty big job, so we don’t blame you for putting it off. However, there are a few tell-tale signs which indicate when a paint job is due, and they shouldn’t be ignored. So, if you spot any of the below, it’s time to consider hitting the hardware store… or calling in the experts.
Cracked, peeling walls
This is a sure sign that it’s time to get to work. The issue normally occurs when water vapour gets in between the wall and the paint, causing an unmistakable separation. This typically indicates poor ventilation or a leak, which you should get checked before applying a fresh coat.
Cracked, peeling walls don’t improve with time, so don’t delay the job for too long.
Mould and mildew
Another issue caused by damp, badly ventilated areas, these fungi will continue to spread until dealt with properly.
Painting over the affected area won’t help, as the mould will simply continue to grow underneath. You’ll need to properly remove the fungus first to avoid having to repeat the paint job a lot sooner than would normally be necessary.
Damaged caulking
Waterproof filler – caulking – can get damaged over time, especially when exposed to extreme weather. This leaves your walls, and paint, susceptible to water damage. Cracked and hardened caulking mustn’t be painted over, so you’ll need to make re-caulking part of your prep work.
Colour fade
UV rays are harmful to the chemicals in paint, and cause pigments to fade over time. This is especially true of darker paints. Compare the portion of a wall that gets plenty of sun to a section of the same wall that stays mostly in the shade – if the two are strikingly different in colour, it’s time to get to work.
Dated colour trends
When it comes to style, paint colours have expiration dates. What looked good 20 years ago probably doesn’t now. Giving your home a fresh coat, with modern colours, will improve its aesthetics and increase the value of your property.
